The skies over McConnellsburg will be bright with the colors
of hang gliders and paragliders on the weekend of October 16th and 17th, as
the Fourteenth Annual Hang Gliding and Paragliding Festival of McConnellsburg gets
underway!
What To See
-
Spot-Landing Contests
-
Pilots attempt to land on a bulls-eye placed within the
Landing Zone; a display of skill (or miserable failure!)
that is always a favorite for spectators.
-
Gliders And More Gliders!
-
As many as 60 gliders are likely to be set up and launched
during the day, an exciting event to watch. Plenty of photo
and video opportunities!
-
Static Hang Glider Display
-
A hang glider will be set up for demonstration in the setup area at the Pulpit launch
site, between the hours of 11:00am and 1:30pm
on both days. Learn about modern hang gliding equipment (avionics,
parachutes, radios), watch videos about the sport, and take
home some promotional goodies from the United States Hang Gliding
Association.
Where To See It
-
The Pulpit
- The launch site for the Festival, located at Tuscarora Summit
on the ridge just east of McConnellsburg, PA, about an hour and 45 minutes from
Washington DC and Baltimore MD. (I-70 West to I-81 North, then Route 16 West
to Mercersburg PA, right onto Route 75 North, left onto Route 30 West, Route 30
to the top of the ridge, then a left onto the dirt road next to Mountain View Inn)
-
The Landing Zone
- The field where hang gliders and paragliders will land.
Head south on Seventh Street (near McDonald's) from downtown
McConnellsburg, for 2.1 miles. The Landing Zone is on the left.
